SILVIU THE THIEF - DONE

Hello all,

I'm happy to announce that I've completed and submitted my novel to the National Novel Writing Month competition. That makes me a winner according to the contest rules. So, yay!

Of course, the real work comes next, formatting the book for publication at Amazon:Kindle and Smashwords (and its various affiliates). I should have it done by next week.

And then on to the next book. Not sure at this stage whether it'll be Book II of The Hero's Knot, or if I'll go back to the Chronicles of Anuru and finish off Book I of The Brotherhood of Wyrms. I think I might take some time off and get back to writing over Christmas.

Anyway, for the moment I think I'll just indulge in a little triumphalism and take a break. Yay again!

And as always, thanks for reading!

Thanks, Instapundit

Professor Glenn Reynolds, the inimitable Instapundit, very kindly posted a plug for my books yesterday in the early afternoon.

As a result, I sold three times as many books in the next 12 hours as I had sold in the previous 3 weeks.

That, ladies and gentlemen, is the power of individuals with strategic reach on the Internet.  Somebody ought to write a book about that phenomenon.

Oh, wait...someone DID!

Elvehelm Maps

I've been posting a lot of material on Elvehelm, and thought it might be a good idea to post the maps, to enable anyone reading this blog to track the story.

And here are some larger-scale versions (the above map divided into quarters scaled for letter-size printing):

Hope these come in handy!

Okay, THERE it is!

Woo hoo!

THERE it is!  Turns out I had forgotten to push the last button.  But now it's available at the Amazon site for Kindle e-books, once again for the low, low price of $2.99.

I'm working on the rewrites for Book III (Daughter of Dragons), which is substantially longer than the other two.  It'll take me a while to get through the amendments, but hopefully I'll have the last volume up within a month or so.

Meanwhile, thanks again to the guys whose imagination and insanity meshed so perfectly with my own.

Cheerio!

First-Time (Fiction) Author!

Well, this certainly feels good.

After trying traditional publishers for the past three years, I finally decided to go for e-publishing via Kindle.  The book is available at Amazon.com for the bargain-basement price of $2.99!

Note that this is Volume 2 of the trilogy entitled Kaunovalta; for some reason, Volume 1 hasn't propagated yet via the publishing system, despite having been submitted several days earlier.  Volume 3 will be some time in coming; I've got some significant rewrites I want to do before I let it out of the box.  Once that's done, I think I'll finish up and publish Bjorn's Saga, and then get to work on the next one.  Maybe it's time to write the Tale of the Shards down in one piece.

Anyway, I'm unreasonably excited by this, so I just thought I'd share.  I've published plenty of academic papers both short and long, but this is my first piece of published fiction.  I'm already planning how to spend my first royalty check.  Depending on how long it takes to rack up $100 in royalties, it might be on...well, on Depends.

Many thanks to Breygon, Joraz and especially Bjorn/Thanos/Karrick for making this all possible!

Yeah, you know who you are.

Rolling up in Anuru

Looks like we may have two new players for our campaign!

In honour of this auspicious occasion, I’ve decided to dedicate this post to the process of rolling up a new PC in Anuru. In order to ensure I don’t miss anything vital, I’ve decided to structure this segment along the lines of the “character creation” page in the Players Handbook (aka PHB), page 6. Here goes.

(1) Check with your Dungeon Master for house rules or campaign standards

Here are the ones that are relevant to you right now:

- we use D&D version 3.5 rules

- the “campaign world”, Anuru, has a very specific cosmology, theology and geography that differ considerably from the standard D&D worlds (Greyhawk, Eberron, etc.)

- no psionics. Not ever.

- we use the 1/60th miniatures on a 1” grid for combat

- in terms of party balance, we already have the following:

Breygon (Half-Elf Ranger 9)
Gwendilyne (Halfling Rogue 9)
Lyra (Hiarsk, i.e. hereditary half-elf, Rogue 1 / Sorceress 7)
Bjorn (Human Fighter 2 / Cleric 6)
Joraz (Human Monk 8)

So the party does not have either a dedicated meat-shield, a dedicated divine spellcaster, a dedicated arcane spellcaster, or any of the odd sourcebook classes. If anyone goes with a Dread Pirate, be advised – I accept only one “Arrrrrhhh!!!” per level, per gaming session.

(Party photo here)

- NOTE: if you want to skip all the hard stuff, you can just take a 7th level NPC from the appropriate section in the DMG (pp. 112-128), assigning your own rolled ability scores and the appropriate racial modifications, and using the equipment listed.

(2) Roll ability scores

- character creation is by rolling six x 4d6, rerolling 1’s, and arranging as desired

- take full HP for the first level; after that, they’re rolled. You can never roll lower on your HP roll than your constitution bonus, if any (so if you have a 17 Con, you can never roll lower than 3 on your HP dice)

(3) Choose your class and race

- classes are as per the PHB 3.5. I’m willing to consider classes from any of the other D&D sourcebooks, just check with me first, as some of the classes are too specialized (e.g., Warlocks), and some don’t fit into an “adventuring motivation” campaign (e.g., Druids).

- races are as per the PHB 3.5, with modifications as per the chart below. Note that age categories differ considerably in Anuru, and there are many sub-species of each of the major PC races. I’m not averse to “monster races”, but check with me for appropriateness, playability and Equivalent Character Level penalties.

- some races are rare (noted with an asterisk in the chart at right). Check with me before choosing one of these as your backstory and class choice may be affected. Races marked with a ** are very rare; you need my permission before choosing one of these.
NO Illumians ("Races of Destiny"). They're superhyperglobalmega-cheesy.

(4) Assign and adjust ability scores

- as per the PHB 3.5 rules

(5) Review the starting packages in the PHB

- yeah, if you feel like it.
- new PCs roll up at 1 level below the lowest PC currently in the party. That means you roll up at 7th level (or any multiclass combination that equals 7)

(6) Record racial and class features

- these are as per the PHB and other sourcebooks, with the exceptions noted in the chart above
- don’t forget the +1 to one ability score you got at 4th level

(7) Select skills

- All PHB and sourcebook skills are allowable

- Don't forget the extra skills you may get according to my "racial options" chart

(8) Select feats

- All PHB and sourcebook feats are allowable

- Don't forget the extra feats you may get according to my "racial options" chart

(9) Select equipment

- All PHB and sourcebook equipment is allowable
- starting gear value is 7200 gp (DMG table 4-23, p. 127). All gear in the PHB, DMG and sourcebooks is allowable, with the following exception: no single item worth more than 4000 gp is permitted; no item of more than +1 magical bonus is permitted.

(10) Record numbers

- fill out your character sheet. The 3.5 character sheets can be found here.

(11) Details, details

- Alignment: the party currently consists of CG, LN and CN. No evil PCs, and I would prefer no more CN. If you insist on CN, be advised that I accept the “undecidedly amoral” CN PC, but not the “psychotically unpredictable” CN PC. If you need an idea of how I view alignments, here it is:

- Gender: Don’t care. But I expect solid role-playing.

Okay, there are a whole BUNCH of other details. Much of what you need to know is already available on this blog. For example:

- the Ancient History of Anuru is on the blog in 5 parts: One, Two, Three, Four, and Five. Read it; it plays a big role in the campaign.

- the relationship between gods and mortals is described here.

- the continent of Erutrei, where the action is currently taking place, can be found here. The PCs are presently adventuring along the Stjerneflade, a major river running from the mountains in the north, to the coast in the south, of Storland, the central of three Grand Duchies in the southeastern monarchy of Zare.

- a brief outline of the party, as it stands at present, is here.

- my special rules for spellcasters can be found here. These represent my biggest break from the D&D rules; wizards and clerics don’t need to “prepare” spells. That always struck me as a crock. If you know a spell, and you have the power, you can cast it. Wizards are “knowledge PCs”, and know more spells; sorcerers are “power PCs”, and can cast more spells. If you're a spellcaster, read this section in detail; if not, don't bother. Incidentally, if you're going to be a divine spellcaster, choose your patron diety carefully; as you'll note from the chart in that section, not all dieties can provide their clerics with the full range of divine spells

- about those gods and immortals…I’m gradually putting up the relevant information, especially if you’re thinking about running a religious characters or divine spellcaster. Briefly put, there are two Forces, light (Ana) and dark (Uru); and 14 Powers: seven of the Light, called the Anari, and seven of the Dark, called the Uruqua. So far I’ve put up the info on the first of the Anari; I’m still working on the material for the last two. Once they’re done I’ll put up the Uruqua. Eventually I will put together my own version of the "Dieties and Demigods", complete with art (that I have co-opted from people with actual talent), and give each player a full-colour copy.

Those I have completed so far can be found here, along with their Greater and Lesser Servants, and their various Avatars:

Bræa (Goddess of good and light, no major religions)

Tîan (Goddess of justice, no major religions)

Vara (Goddess of mercy and healing, some major, some minor religions)

Hara (God of the Elves and magic, some major, some minor religions); Hara’s Avatars can be found here

Esu (God of Men and battle, some major, some minor religions)

- and finally, there are a couple of special classes and Prestige classes that are peculiar to my campaign. Those I have posted about so far include:

The Priests of the Healing Hand

The Knights of Tîan
There are a few other campaign-specific prestige classes, but I haven't gotten them formatted or posted yet. Note that these are provided for information only; some of them would be very difficult to play as PCs (the Hand Priests, for example, are great healer/boosters, but are forbidden by the vows from doing lethal damage)

* * * * *

Okay, that’s about enough background information to go on for now. New players, call me when you get a chance; otherwise, we’ll see you next game night! In the meantime, take a stab at what you think you might want to play.

All Hail the Order of the Stick!

[UPDATED]

You know, for people who pride themselves not only on being gaming geeks but also on being dedicated net-heads, the fact that we all went so long without becoming totally addicted to the Order of the Stick simply boggles me gulliver.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with it, the Order of the Stick is a net-based cartoon strip that began more than four years ago with this masterpiece. The strip’s genius lies, in my humble analysis, in three things:

1) it follows a very traditional D&D story arc, with heroes, villains and quests;

2) it does a marvellous job both of sticking to the 3.5 Edition rules, and highlighting the inanities in the rules structure that long-time players find annoying, or just plain weird; and

3) it’s funny. Damned funny.

The thing is so popular that four books have been published to date, and all of the major characters (and villains) have their own Wikipedia entries.

I’m in the process of buying all the books, and have been following the strip maniacally on the web. But OOTS has also brought us inspiration in many other ways. Breygon’s player got so chuffed about it that he located an OOTS avatar for each member of the original, and current, adventuring parties.

So without further ado, I give you the past…

[UPDATE - see below]

And the present!

[UPDATE - I created and posted these graphic compilations before reading the FAQ over at GITP, where Rich Burlow asks folks not to copy or modify his graphics. That's his right, of course, so in deference to his wishes I've taken the images down. All the more reason to get out my 2B pencil and come up with my own graphics, I guess!]

[I'm keeping it on my desktop, though! BWAHAHAHAHAH!]

Both offered with a hearty salute to creator Rich Burlew and Giant In The Playground comics.

You keep drawing them, Rich, and we’ll keep buying them!

How the DM sees the Party

A few posts ago, I introduced the PCs. But they say a picture is worth a thousand words.

Every player sees their PC a different way – and so does the DM. After you’ve been playing together a while, you start to get this image in your mind’s eye, and it can be a little hard to purge.

Anyway, here’s a little graphic I did up a few months ago, using images cobbled together off the internet, as a mnemonic for the Party. Responses to this were as follows:

Breygon: “I’m a Half-elf, not an Indian. Native American. Aboriginal person. Whatever.”

Lyra: “I’m, like, WAY hotter than that.”

Bjorn: “Where’s my armour? I didn’t trade it for beer, did I?”

Joraz: “Green balloon pants? What’s THAT about?”

Gwen: “Woo-HOO! Lookit mah boo-TAY!”

Harroaharg, aka Greywind the Half-Celestial Winter Wolf (who is Breygon’s animal companion), didn’t register any complaints. Of course, he’s an NPC, so he works for me…and I guess he wants to keep on working.

Some good DID come of putting this collage out there, though – it got the players all indignant and prompted them to send me pics of what their PCs REALLY look like.

Maybe I’ll post those ones some time in the future. But these images will always hold a special place in my heart.

P.S. Don’t worry, Joraz – Haugulf Hardfist, Fist of the Allfather at the Grand Temple in Bymill, won’t bury you in the green balloon pants. It’s against his religion.

P.P.S. “Can’t touch this!” Hah!

Meet the Party

You'll come to know our player characters (hereafter PCs) a little better over the coming weeks. But by way of a bit of introduction, here's something of an outline.

The party met in Aeryn, once an independent kingdom, now a Duchy incorporated into Vestland, one of the three provinces of the Kingdom of Zare. I won't go into the details of their meeting at this stage (perhaps one of the intrepid adventurers might take on that task in the future), but suffice it to say, they were oddly matched form the start.

Alric, a farming lad of human descent, was a young lad of no little brawn, with some knowledge of weapons, and out looking to better his lot. Alric made his name slaughtering 0-level ruffians with an ironwood greatclub, getting gnawed on by dire wolves, and inaugurating the immortal phrase, "I smell like a bear."

Breygon Sylvanus, a Half-Elven ranger, was a fellow of both town and woods, of uncertain parentage, and jaded after a career squiring brainless nobles through the tame and track-ridden woods of Aeryn. A man of few words, he excelled at felling foes from bowshot, until Alric left the party and he suddenly became the meatshield-cum-moulinex. He now spends a lot of his time trying to get in touch with his Elven heritage, bits and pieces of which keep popping up at the most inconvenient moments.

Gwendilyne, a halfling thief of extraordinary talents and extraordinarily bad judgement, made the acquaintance of her future partners while trying to drag a sack of stolen coins through a busy marketplace. Gwen's patented catch-phrase is, "I don't get mad, I get stabby!", and when faced with the possibility of sharing treasure with others, has been known to say "Boooo!" Gwen's Spot check is so high that she has been known to succeed even on a critical failure. Gwen recently became the proprietor of The Halfling's Hearth, a small tavern in the bustling town of Bymill, and is looking forward to opening it again, in order to fleece customers wholesale, instead of merely retail.

Joraz, a sober and reflective student of unarmed combat, sought to avenge his slain master, and recover his master's greatest written works from his killers, with the ultimate goal of reconstituting the Order of Tyrellus. Joraz was distinguished as being in the forefront of battle; and, since he doesn't wear armour, he is also the only member of the party to go below 0 hit points more than twice. Third time was the charm; he's dead now, and the party's new side-adventure is "looking for a diamonds worth a total of at least 5,000 gp."

And finally Qaramyn, a College Wizard of the Order of Light, was hoping both to prove himself, and to come to grips with the burgeoning arcane powers that made him more than mortal. Qaramyn's guiding ethos was formed in one of his early battles, when he discovered that the one thing he enjoyed more than a really heavy study session was burning people alive.

Alric and Qaramyn have both, regrettably, left the party; Alric has taken up a position as Lieutenant of Guards in the great city of Vejborg, on the south coast of Zare, while Qaramyn has accepted a position in the Royal Library in that selfsame city. Both will, doubtless, be back. In the meantime, their lamentable absence has been filled by two new arrivals:

Lyra Alyra, a Hiarsk (hereditary half-elf, rather than recent half-breed - more ancient history to follow!), began life as a rogue, but when her inborn talents as a sorceress emerged, she decided to follow a different path. Somewhat lacking in an internal moral compass, Lyra goes where the wind takes her, and looks DAMNED good doing it. Lyra has been having odd dreams lately, and the party is still wondering when they're going to get some use out of that Wand of Enlarge that she dropped 6,000 gold on.

And let us not forget Bjorn Guthbrandr - a fish out of water if there ever was one. A monstrously enormous warrior-cleric of Esu, the Allfather, Bjorn is a long way from his Jarlin home, doing his best to bring the blessing of the Mikkelseggr, the Big Man, to the heathen, and crushing a few skulls along the way. Bjorn stomps through life wearing a dead paladin's armour and carrying the biggest damned hammer anyone has ever seen, which he uses as a Seven-Iron on ogre heads.

Bjorn and Lyra, incidentally, share that special bond forged as the result of being the only two members of the party who have actually tried to beat the crap out of each other.

So much for the adventurers. In my next post, I'll bring you up to speed on some of the nasty things they've survived (or not survived; sic transit gloria...oh yeah, I already did that joke).

Also, more will be written about their early adventures, the first of which was a test of strength that saw them each recuited as members of the Watch of Aeryn (mostly to keep them off the streets). In this guise, after some weeks together, learning each other's strengths and weaknesses, and vanquishing a nest of bandits into the bargain, they left the ancient Duchy, setting out for an isolated fortress - and finding more along the road than they bargained for.

Because, hey - don't they always?

Roll Initiative!

Welcome, stranger, to Anuru.

If you happen to be a normal, rational human being, you should probably be aware that this is a blog dedicated to the perambulations of a group of rag-tag adventurers scrambling purposefully across the vast, sprawling landmass of Erutrei, one continent (of many) on Anuru, the World of Light and Shadow.

That's right - you've stumbled onto the gaming site of a Dungeons and Dragons(TM) group. Try not to sprain your index finger stabbing madly at the BACK button on your browser.

The purpose of this blog is to provide an on-line resource for members of our group, both to keep them up to date on developments in the world their player characters inhabit, and to give them an opportunity to post information, questions, thoughts and ideas about the campaign in particular, and the Great Game in general.

Casual readers should be aware that we began this campaign almost a year ago, and while we've been talking about setting up a blog, we hadn't done so to date. So we're a little behind the magic eight-ball, and as a result, I hope to post a tidal wave of background information in the early days, just to try to bring us up to present-day, game-wise. This will include all sorts of background material, including history, religion, character-generation material, and all sorts of synoptical material. I'll also post the details of dungeons the PCs have survived (or not survived; sic transit gloria Joraz), treasures won, experience gained, and synopses concerning how things went, and what happened in between. All good stuff.

Hopefully I'll be able, with the assistance of my gaming confreres, to keep at this regularly, and the end result will be a chronology of what has been, and I hope will continue to be, a damned enjoyable game.

For those of you who aren't Dungeons and Dragons (TM) fans but, as is often the case with traffic accidents, are unable to look away, I invite you to stick around. You will have a fascinating front-row seat at a window into the workings of the mind of nerdis canadensiis. If you ARE fans of the game, welcome aboard. I offer you four heartening data points for the future:

(1) we're all over 30, and just as enthusiastic about the game today as we were when we started playing it (which, in two cases, was back when it was called Blackmoor);

(2) two-thirds of us are married (yes, it CAN happen), and one third of us have kids;

(3) none of us lives in his Mom's basement; and

(4) one of us is a girl (yes, it CAN happen).

So join us on our adventure, if you dare. Or snort derisively and move on to the next blog. Whatever.

The scene is a tavern. Before you on the scarred surface of the table is a two-liter bottle of Strongbow cider, a bag of Sweet Chili Heat Doritos, and a handful of odd-looking, polygonal dice...

ROLL INITIATIVE!
